OCR: ROBOTS MARTIAN ROVERS @ ROBOTS IN FILM The robot's tasks For the exploration of Mars, a robot must be able to accomplish the following tasks: - Move to a target. Gather soil samples to carry out analyses, either directly or on return to Earth. - Install equipment on and below the surface. Transport equipment and material for building and operating a base station. Robots are expected to be able to carry out all of these tasks with progress in artificial intelligence in the next 20 years. Broadly, we can identify three kinds of robot-vehicles: - Vehicles controlled directly from Earth. The efficiency of these vehicles is limited by the problem of communication time: it takes 20 minutes for information from Mars to reach Earth and 20 minutes more to send instructions to the vehicle.
